Old skool and new school gaming...

As a gamer geek who fondly remembers the era of 2 bit gaming, (I'm SNES bias) I always find myself smiling fondly at any retro gaming cake.

The 2600 Atari, is a console I never personally owned, yet it's classic design sillouette will be recognizable to all old skool gaming fans everywhere.

The miscellaneous blog about:blank has a very well rendered example of this classic console in cake form:

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the creation of this cake, other than everything in the picture (except the wooden base board) is edible. I wonder if the wooden paneling is icing or something else - chocolate perhaps?

And now we go from old skool to current console technology. Behold an impressively iced Halo 3 cake.

Before GTA3 (Grand Theft Auto) was released for the XBOX 360, Halo 3 was the biggest and fasting selling game for the console .., evah. In fact, Wikipedia states:

Halo 3 grossed US$300 million in its first week. More than one million people played Halo 3 on Xbox Live in the first twenty hours. As of January 3, 2008, Halo 3 has sold 8.1 million copies and was the best-selling video game of 2007 in the U.S.

Some of the staff over at the GameGuru blog were lucky enough to be at Microsoft HQ for the games launch. In true geek style, they decided to make a geekcake to celebrate.

That's all for this post. Have a good weekend and see you Monday.

Fondant NES.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (often abbreviated as NESd[›] or simply Nintendo) is an 8-bit video game console that was released by Nintendo in North America, Brazil, Europe, and Australia in 1985.
[Source: Wikipedia]

The NES doesn't seem to get as much Cake-love as the SNES, but I have found a wonderful instance of it over at the GBA News blog.

NES_Fondant_cake

The cake is yellow, the controller is two Hershey bars with nougat between them, connected to the cake by black licorice, and the whole thing is that hard-sugar frosting.

Created by his co-workers as leaving gift, Kotakuite Eric was leaving his old job for a new one in the gaming industry, and was given the above NES cake at his leaving party

Doesn't that sound like sweet tooth heaven?

That's all for this post, see you Friday.

Lobster, lobster Rock !

There are many kinds of Geek, not just the gaming kind. Andrew Bleiman is a Zoology Geek and even got an unsual nickname because of it:

"Lobsters and I have a long history. When I studied abroad in Belgium in 2001, my Flemish friends dubbed me "De Kreeft" - The Lobster - in Dutch because I had a habit of snapping at them with metal tongs when they cramped me in our tiny shared kitchen. The name stuck and today I frequently feature them on my zoology blog. Huge kudos to my wife who took my lobster obsession and ran with it selflessly, as she is more of a Kate Spade girl than a crustaceaophile."

And when he say's his wife 'ran with it' he's not kidding. See below for the intricately detailed cake that the Lucky Andrew had for his wedding day - supplied by his wife-to-be Lillian:

Not only is it striking and unusual, apparently it was delicious as well!

"After the band and my bride of course, the cake was the hit of the wedding. At one point there was a line to photograph it and there are probably as many guest pictures of the cake as my wife and me. Not only did it look unbelievable, but it was filled with chocolate and peanut butter and was (apparently) so good that it was gone before I got to try it. People immediately helped themselves to seconds and it was gone in minutes."

I asked Andrew what the secrets behind it's creation was. He replied:

"I didn't help in making the cake so I don't know the secrets, but can say that "Sugar in the Raw" makes awesome fake sand."

So a big thanks to Andrew (and Lillian) for sharing their wedding cake pictures with the world. For more zoological anecdotes and info check out Andrew's blog here:

That's it for today see you Wednesday !

[minor updates and apologies.
I mispelt zoology through-out , and Andrew's Wife is calle Lillian not Kate, as I previously stated. Apologies to Lillian]

More Tux, and Guitar Hero

M1stque over on Flickr created a Tux cake for her partner:

Tux_icing

She states: "He collects penguins and he's a big Linux-fan, so I didn't have to think hard on what I should make him ;)"

And a mighty fine Tux cake it is too!

This miniature 'axe was a random Google find.

Guitar_hero_unknown

If you have any information on it's creation I would love to hear from you, faintdreams[at]gmail[dot]com I like to think it's got liquorice in there somewhere to achieve all that black, but I have no idea.

That's all for today see you on Monday.

Tux!

Linux is a free computer operating system that comes in many different flavours know as 'Distributions'.

Each Distribution has it's own logo / mascot, but Tux seems to be the default international cross-distribution Penguin mascot for Linux fans everywhere.

A Google image search for 'Linux Tux' gives more than 210,00 results, and shows the smiling (smirking?) Penguin in a many many guises.

Joseph Hall created a very impressive 3d rendition of Tux as a cake, and gives detailed step by step instructions for you to make your own. (All ten steps! From Step 1 - baking the base, to Step 10 - storage and transportation.)

He's almost too cute to cut into isn't he?

See you Friday !

Transformers... cakes are in disguise

Over at Technabob", a wonderfully crafted Transformer cake is showcased. Created for an incredibly lucky 5 year old boy called Evan, This Transformer cake features a very detailed sugar icing rendition of Optimus Prime.

Unfortunately I don't have nay details of construction or ingredients. I'd like to think it's Vam and Victoria Sponge underneath (in keeping with the red theme), but I guess I shall never know !

That's it for today. See you Wednesday!
